About me

Hello, I'm Jonathon, I'm an experienced tutor and teacher of Science (and occasionally P.E) with a passion to ensure that all students are able to reach their full potential. I qualified as a teacher in 2021 and I have been teaching and tutoring in Science (and P.E) since then and I have experience with the four major exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC) and at both the foundation & higher tiers for combined and separate science. Outside of teaching/tutoring, I spend most of my time travelling or involved with sport. My academic background includes a PGCE in Secondary Education (specialising in Science), a BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Sport and Health Science as well as an FdSc degree in Sports Science and Injury Management. These are all in addition to A levels and GCSE’s in Science. My...

I'm a Mathematics and Data Science graduate of the London School of Economics, and I now run a startup that uses machine learning in drug discovery, so I put the maths I teach to work every day. I studied Maths, Physics, Computer Science and Chemistry at A-level, earning an A* in Maths, and I'm a two-time gold medallist in the National Physics Olympiad. I tutor Maths, Physics and Computer Science from GCSE through A-level, and I also prepare students for university admissions tests and Oxbridge applications. Having recently sat these exams myself, I know exactly where students get stuck. My approach is patient and diagnostic: I find the gap, rebuild from there, and focus on real understanding and problem-solving rather than memorising. Most of all, I love helping students go from dreading a subject to feeling confident and capable in it. I attended St Paul's School, where I took A-levels in Mathematics (A*), Physics (A), Computer Science (A) and Chemistry (A), along with an A* EPQ in electrical and systems engineering. At GCSE I earned seven grade 9s, including Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science, and four grade 8s. I then studied for a BSc in Mathematics and Data Science at the London School of Economics (LSE), with coursework spanning machine learning, optimisation, real and complex analysis, probability and statistics, graph theory and algorithms. Alongside my degree I completed Harvard's CS50 and an MIT course in mathematics for finance. My specialisations are Maths, Physics and Computer Science at GCSE and A-level, and preparing students for university admissions tests (STEP, TMUA and ESAT) and Oxbridge applications. I'm also a two-time gold medallist in the National Physics Olympiad, which is exactly the kind of problem-solving these entrance exams reward.

GCSE Subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science Exam Board Experience: AQA, Edexcel Preferred Student Age Group: GCSE Hi, I’m Hagen, a third-year Pharmacy student at the University of Reading with a strong background in biology and chemistry. Before university, I achieved top marks in BTEC Applied Science, and my degree has continued to build on that foundation through detailed scientific study. I tutor GCSE Combined Science, Biology, and Chemistry, focusing on helping students properly understand topics rather than just memorising facts. I know science can become confusing quickly when concepts start building on each other, so I aim to explain things clearly, break them down into simple steps, and make them feel more manageable. My teaching style is patient, straightforward, and focused on what actually helps students improve. I want students to feel more confident with the subject, not just get through the lesson. I understand that different students learn at different paces, which is why I keep my explanations clear, structured, and tailored to how each individual learns best. Alongside my academic studies, I have experience teaching and guiding others through my role as an NCO in the Army Cadets, which helped me develop strong communication skills and a structured approach to helping people learn. My aim is to make science feel more approachable and to help students build confidence, improve their understanding, and achieve stronger results. MPharm (Master of Pharmacy) | University of Reading 2023 – 2028 My degree is building a strong foundation across the key sciences behind medicines and healthcare, including biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and patient-focused practice. Studying Pharmacy has strengthened my ability to understand complex scientific material, apply knowledge in a structured way, and explain difficult ideas clearly. BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science | North Hertfordshire College Grades: Triple Distinction Star (D*D*D) This qualification provided me with an intensive, practical background in both advanced biology and chemistry, preparing me directly for the rigorous demands of a healthcare degree. GCSEs | Dame Alice Owen’s School Completed my secondary education at a highly respected, top-performing school, securing the essential foundational qualifications required for higher-level scientific study. Healthcare & Industry Experience I have gained valuable experience in professional science and healthcare environments through working as a pharmacy assistant and completing work experience with GSK (GlaxoSmithKline). These roles have given me a broader understanding of how chemistry and biology are applied in real-world clinical and industrial settings, which I bring directly into my teaching.

I’m passionate about helping students not just understand their subjects, but feel confident applying what they’ve learned in exams. My teaching style is supportive, structured, and tailored to each student’s individual pace and learning style. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy cooking, travelling, and playing table tennis. Levels & Subjects I Teach PRIMARY: Mathematics, Science LOWER LEVEL ( 7-9 ): Mathematics, Science GCSE ( 10 - 11): Science, Mathematics, Business, Geography, History IGCSE ( 10 - 11): Science, Mathematics Exam Board Experience AQA - GCSE Edexcel - GCSE Cambridge - GCSE / IGCSE OCR - GCSE Languages English – Native French – Beginner Preferred Student Age Group Primary GCSE IGCSE I hold a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Business Economics, where I developed strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to break down complex ideas into simple, understandable concepts. For my A-levels, I studied Mathematics, Economics, and Psychology under the AQA and Edexcel exam boards. This gave me a solid academic foundation and a strong understanding of both numerical and essay-based subjects. I completed my IGCSEs under the Cambridge exam board, which exposed me to an internationally recognised curriculum and helped me build disciplined study habits from an early stage. I also completed part of my education in Nigeria, which has given me a broader perspective on learning and allows me to connect with students from different backgrounds and adapt to their individual needs and growth.
